Why Won't they Stay Put?
Published on December 22, 2004 By zorven In Object Desktop
I have recently started using DesktopX and Icon Packager. When I loaded DX, it rearranged all my desktop icons. Ok, no bigggie, I needed to clean up anyway. Then I discoverd Icon Packager and installed a new icon theme. It rearranged all my icons. I am getting hesitant to try anything else else I will need to rearrange the icons again. Is there anyway to prevent this or to restore my layout?

IconPackager shouldn't have re-arranged anything.(could have been the fact that you installed IP vs changing themes) Use DX to put them where you want and lock them in place.

Everytime I use IconPackager to load a new package, it moves all the desktop icons.

How do you lock them in place with DesktopX?

Well, now that you say that, I looked and in the 2.4 version they took out the option to lock everything in place. About the only thing you can do is right click on the desktop and set to grid or right click on each object/properties and change movement default to locked.

I am using version 2. I brought up DesktopX, chose the DesktopX tab, then chose Default Movement: Locked. Restarted Desktop X. Opened IconPackager, loaded a new package, and the icons still move. Maybe I am missing something, but this behavior is making me think a bit more about buying Object Desktop.

Thanks for you help Developer yrag.

I wouldn't let it sway your thinking about OD, one way or the other. I don't use desktop icons at all, so I'm a little rusty on the subject, but I do use DX and Icon Packager (and everything else for that matter) and have never encountered any problems with any Stardock program. When it comes to the desktop, there are so many variables (resolutions, work space setbacks, games, etc) that it's almost impossible to tell which is causing the movement on your machine. I can tell you what it shouldn't be doing, but in this case I would obviously be wrong. There is one thing I've learned over the years using Stardock is that you can play with the settings (which I recommend you do with these) and they will never trash your system and will almost always work out the way you want. If something goes wrong just unload it and you're good to go. Software is supposed to be fun and these are.

That ends my sales pitch....good luck and enjoy

I had the same thing happen on mine Yrag when I was using desktop icons. But in my case it didn't happen every time...only every other time. But now I use ObjectDock.

Update....

I stopped experimenting with the various Object Desktop software and my icons have stayed in place for the last 2 months...until tonight. I load up Stardock Central (SDC) because I haven't for a while and am getting to the urge to buy something from Stardock. So SDC starts up and immediately begins updating itself and requires a re-boot for the changes to take affect - ok. Windows re-boots and what do I see? ALL OF MY ICONS RE-ARRANGED!
