My kids are going to spend their first night away from home on Friday when they stay at my parents house. So, that leaves my wife and I with a date night. I think our last one was last summer...not sure. I used to like going to the movies, so I thought maybe that is what we would do. But I am just not looking forward to it. You see, the last time we went (last summer, I think...remember our last date night?) was not a pleasant experience. Not that the movie was bad (or good, don't even remember what we saw), but the commercials ruined the whole experience for me.

Here is how it went for me the last time. The movie is listed with a start time of 8:10. Now, I like to make sure I get a decent seat, so I like to arrive a little early - that way you get a good choice of seats and the lights are still on to help you along in the process. So then you end up waiting for 10 minutes for the start time. And waiting. I think it was somewhere between 8:15 and 8:20 when the lights finally went out. So I have already been waiting 15 to 20 minutes. Alright. Now I am ready for the movie....or some more trivia questions. Oh, ok here we go....no wait that is the spiel about cell phones, smoking, more food available...blah blah. Ok. Next are previews. I like previews. Umm, no. A commercial. Just like on TV. In fact, about 5-6 commercials. How nice that I am paying to see commercials. This really sucks. I can't believe they are showing me commercials for 5 minutes. Now come the previews that I like. Except that I am still ticked off about the commercials and thus don't enjoy the previews.

Now, the rest of the movie I was just stewing over the fact that they not only had the gaul to show a commercial, but 5 minutes worth..when I paid to be here. After they started late. It was I believe somewhere between 8:30 and 8:40 when the movie actually started. I literally thought about the commercials and the late start all through the movie. I still think about it when even considering going back. I am not sure I want to go back.

Commercials in theaters suck. There's no reason why they couldn't show commercials constantly up until time for the movie, but showing them after the scheduled showtime is cheesy. It's no different with cableTV, though. You pay for the service and still have to tolerate the network's commercials.

Showing commercials up to the point of the posted start time would be fine. I feel like once that start time has arrived, that is time I paid for and I didn't pay to see commercials.

On cable tv, I disagree with you a bit. I feel like I am paying the cable company to provide access to all those channels I wouldn't otherwise have access to. However, if I pay on top of that for a specific channel, like HBO, then I would not expect to be viewing any commericals. Heck, HBO probably has commercials these days (it has been many years since I have seen HBO.)
